Skipping a Solar Cleaning Job for Wind, Heat, Rain or No Roof Access, and Noting Why
Every solar cleaning company skips jobs. Wind comes up, the afternoon gets too hot, it rains, or the tech gets to the house and there is no safe way onto the roof. Skipping is not a failure. Skipping without saying why is. In SolarCleaningBossPro, the Skip button comes with a note, and that note is what turns a skipped job into a smooth reschedule.
Skip Is One of Three Buttons
Start, Skip and Complete are on every job card. Photos come in between, including the bird and nest shots covered in Photographing Bird Droppings and Nests: What the Solar Cleaning Tech Should Capture. Skip is the button nobody wants to tap, but it is the one that most needs a good note.
Wind
Wind is the most common reason to skip a roof job. A ladder and a water-fed pole act like a sail, and a tech on a steep two-story roof is more exposed to a gust than one on a single-story ranch. There is no single wind number that fits every roof, crew and setup. Each company should set its own rule and the tech should follow it, and if it feels unsafe on the roof, it is unsafe.
Good wind note: “Gusting hard at the ridge on 3-story steep roof. Not safe today. Try early morning.”
Heat
Panels in full summer sun get very hot. Many crews avoid spraying cool water on hot glass and plan to clean early in the morning or later in the day instead. Check the panel maker's cleaning guidance for the panels you are working on, because their instructions are what matter for the customer's warranty. Heat is also a safety issue for the tech: hot shingles, dehydration and tired legs on a ladder.
Good heat note: “Panels too hot to clean by 1pm. Move to first stop tomorrow.”
Rain
Rain does not always stop a cleaning. Light rain on a ground mount may be fine. A wet, slick roof is a different matter. Ice, frost and moss make a roof worse still. When the roof is not safe to walk or the ladder will not sit firm, skip and say so.
Good rain note: “Roof wet and slick after the morning rain. Low pitch but mossy on the north side.”
No Access
Then there are the skips that have nothing to do with weather:
- Locked gate. “Side gate padlocked, code in notes does not work. Spigot and ladder spot are both in back.”
- Dog in the yard. “Large dog out in back, nobody home to bring it in.”
- Blocked ladder spot. “Car parked on the driveway where the ladder goes, customer not answering.”
- No safe roof access. “Back patio torn out. No firm spot for the ladder on the access side. Need a new plan.”
- Commercial access. “Roof hatch key not at front desk. Building manager out today.”
A photo of the locked gate or the blocked spot makes the note even clearer. It also protects the company if the customer later says nobody showed up. The skip, the time and the photo are all saved on the job, so the office can show that the truck was there and explain exactly why the work could not be done that day.
What Happens After the Skip
The office sees the skip with the reason attached. That is enough to act on right away:
- Text the customer through two-way texting: “Our tech had to skip today due to high wind. We have you down for Thursday morning.”
- Put the job on another day and truck on the dispatch board.
- Fix the access notes if something has changed, like a new gate code or a new ladder spot.
A weather skip and an access skip need different responses. Weather usually means a new day. Access usually means a phone call first. The note tells the office which one it is.
Skipping early helps too. If the tech can tell from the forecast or the first roof of the day that the afternoon will be too windy, a quick call to the office lets dispatch rebuild the afternoon around ground mounts and carports.
Never Push Through
The worst outcome is not a skipped job. It is a tech who did not want to tap Skip, so they climbed anyway. Make it clear to your crew that a skip with a good note is always acceptable, and that no single roof is worth a fall. Roof safety habits are covered in Roof Safety Habits for Solar Cleaning Techs, and Where the App Fits In. For the rest of the tech app, visit the SolarCleaningBossPro solar cleaning app page.
Skips That Come With a Reason
SolarCleaningBossPro lets techs skip with a note, so the office can reschedule and text the customer while the facts are fresh.
