A Growth Plan for a Solar Cleaning Business: From One Truck to Three
Growth without a plan usually looks like this: a great spring, a new truck bought on the excitement, a hire made in a hurry, then a slow fall with bills that the business cannot carry. A growth plan does not need to be long. It needs to say what you build at each stage, what has to be true before you move to the next, and how you will pay for it.
Plan From Your Routine
The numbers you check every week, as covered in The Solar Cleaning Business Owner's Weekly Routine, are what tell you when you are ready to grow. A growth plan simply writes down which numbers you are waiting for.
The stages below are a common path, not the only one. Some owners stay at one truck by choice and run a very profitable small business. That is a fine plan too, as long as it is a choice.
Stage 1: One Truck, Owner Cleaning
Goals at this stage:
- Set a price list that leaves a profit: per panel, minimum, story and steep-pitch add-ons, extras.
- Build a base of recurring plan customers, twice a year and yearly for homes.
- Keep every customer in a system from day one: panel details, access notes, plans, cards on file.
- Write safety rules and standard procedures as you go.
- Save a cash cushion for the slow months.
Ready to move on when: the truck is full most weeks, cleanings come due faster than you can clear them, and you have a cushion in the bank.
Stage 2: One Truck, First Hire
Before buying a second truck, many owners add a tech to the first one. The tech learns your procedures beside you, then starts running some routes alone while you quote, sell and handle office work.
Goals: train the tech fully, test your procedures on someone else, and free some of your time for sales, especially commercial accounts and recurring plan sign-ups.
Ready to move on when: the tech runs solo routes reliably, the Waiting List is still growing, and you have enough recurring work to keep a second truck busy through most of the year.
Stage 3: Two Trucks
The usual split: one truck on homes, one on commercial arrays, carports and property owners with many buildings. Filter the dispatch board by truck and route each from the shop.
Goals at this stage:
- Keep both trucks consistent: same procedures, same job details, same customer experience.
- Hire part-time office help for texting, quotes, scheduling and billing follow-up.
- Set office user roles so each person has the access they need.
- Set property owners to Monthly billing so they get one statement for every site.
- Check weekly numbers by truck.
The details of this step are in Adding a Second Truck to Your Solar Cleaning Business.
Stage 4: Three Trucks and a Real Office
At three trucks, you are running a company, not a crew. Goals:
- A senior tech or crew lead who can train new hires and handle the hardest roofs.
- Office help that runs the day without you: Waiting List, routes, texts, quotes, billing.
- The owner mostly off the trucks, focused on sales, people, safety and money.
- A clear split of work across trucks: homes by area, commercial, or a mix.
Software needs grow too. SolarCleaningBossPro plans are $59, $89 and $199 per month; companies at this size usually run the Crew plan, which includes the largest monthly text allowance.
Paying for Growth
Each stage costs money before it earns it. Plan how you will pay:
- Buy trucks and equipment after a busy season, from savings, rather than at the start of one on hope.
- Keep enough cash to cover payroll for a slow stretch with the new hire on board.
- Get paid on the day of the job with cards on file, so growth is not stuck waiting on invoices.
- Grow recurring plans first. They make the next stage's revenue predictable.
Write It Down and Review It
Put your plan on one page: the stage you are in, what you are building, and the numbers that will tell you it is time for the next stage. Review it every few months. Plans change, and that is fine, as long as you change them on purpose. The traps along the way are covered next, in Mistakes to Avoid When Growing a Solar Cleaning Business.
