Pricing Plan Visits vs One-Time Solar Panel Cleanings

Every solar cleaning owner who starts selling plans hits the same question: should a plan visit cost the same as a one-time cleaning, or less? There is no single right answer, and it depends on your costs and your market. But there are some practical ways to think about it, and some mistakes worth avoiding.

Why Plan Visits Are Different

Offering a Solar Cleaning Plan at the First Job covered how to make the offer. Before you make it, you need a price you can say confidently.

A plan visit is not the same job as a one-time cleaning, even on the same roof:

All of that lowers your cost per visit. The question is whether to share some of that savings with the customer.

Option 1: Same Price, More Value

Some operators charge plan customers the same per-panel rate as one-time customers and add value instead of cutting price. Common examples:

This keeps your pricing simple and protects your margin. It works well when your one-time price is already competitive. More on inspections is in Adding an Inspection Every Other Visit to a Solar Panel Maintenance Plan.

Option 2: A Plan Rate

Other operators set a plan rate a bit below the one-time price. For example, a company might charge a one-time customer $8 a panel with a $150 minimum, and a twice-a-year customer $7 a panel with a $130 minimum. These are made-up examples, not recommendations. Your numbers have to come from your own costs.

A plan rate gives the customer a clear, easy reason to commit, and it is easy for a tech to explain in the driveway. The risk is cutting too deep. Make sure the plan price still covers drive time, labor, water and equipment wear, even on a small system.

Keep the Minimum Charge

Whatever you do with the per-panel rate, keep a minimum charge on plan visits. A small system on a two-story roof still means setting up ladders, fall protection and the water-fed pole. The minimum protects you on those stops.

The same goes for add-ons. A 2-story or 3+ story roof, a steep pitch, bird proofing per panel and critter guards all add time and risk. Keep them as line items on plan visits just as on one-time work, so the price follows the job.

Build Both From One Service List

In SolarCleaningBossPro, estimates are built from your service list: a per-panel price, a minimum charge, story and steep-pitch add-ons, bird proofing per panel, critter guards and inspection. If you use a plan rate, add it as its own service so it is easy to pick on the estimate.

Building both prices from one list keeps them consistent. A tech or office person quoting a new customer can show the one-time price and the plan price side by side without inventing numbers. The customer approves online, and the approved estimate becomes the scheduled job.

Commercial Plans

Commercial arrays often get a lower per-panel rate because of volume, but they bring their own costs: longer days, lifts or roof hatches, parking lot timing and more paperwork. Many operators price quarterly commercial visits per panel per site, with a monthly statement covering every building. Others agree on a fixed price per visit per site. Either way, put it on an estimate the customer approves.

Raising Prices on Existing Plans

Costs go up. When you raise plan prices, give customers notice by text or email before the next visit, explain it plainly, and update the price on their job. Most plan customers stay if they are happy with the work and they hear about it before the charge.

Write your plan pricing down in one place and share it with everyone who quotes. When the office, the owner and the techs all say the same number, customers trust it. When three people give three different answers, customers start shopping around, and the plan conversation turns into a haggle.

Pick a Price You Can Say

The best plan price is one your techs can say in one sentence without looking it up. For how plans, estimates and billing fit together, visit the recurring solar cleaning software page.
