Adding a Second Truck: When a Solar Cleaning Route Outgrows One Crew
Most solar cleaning companies start with one truck, one pure-water system and the owner on the roof. At some point the phone rings more than one crew can answer. Adding a second truck is one of the biggest steps a small company takes, and the scheduling side of it decides whether the second truck makes money or just makes noise.
New Customers Are Usually the Reason
Fitting new customers into existing routes, covered in Fitting First-Time Solar Cleaning Customers Into an Existing Route, works until there is no room left in the routes. When every day is full and new customers are waiting weeks, the question stops being how to squeeze them in and becomes whether it is time for another crew.
Signs You Are Ready
There is no single number that says it is time, but a few signs show up again and again:
- The Waiting List map has overdue pins most weeks, not just after weather.
- New customers are being told to wait longer than you are comfortable with.
- Commercial arrays are being squeezed between homes and their site timing suffers.
- The owner is on the roof all day and building routes all evening.
- Busy season is turning away work you would like to keep.
If several of those are true for months, not just during one dirty season, a second truck is worth a serious look.
How to Split the Work
There are two common ways to divide work between two trucks. The first is by kind of work: one truck on homes and one on commercial arrays, ground mounts and big jobs. That split is covered in One Truck on Homes, One on Arrays: Splitting Residential and Commercial Solar Cleaning Routes. The second is by area: one truck on the north and west side, one on the south and east.
Many companies start with the kind-of-work split because the equipment is different, then add area splits as more residential trucks come on.
Setting Up the Second Truck
In SolarCleaningBossPro, adding a truck is mostly about people and assignments. Add the new tech as an employee with a personal PIN, assign them to the new truck, and they log in with the company login and their PIN on their own phone. The dispatch board filters by truck, so each crew's day is planned on its own, and each tech sees only their own stops in route order.
Office user roles help if someone else will start doing the dispatching, so the owner does not have to give away full access to everything.
Building Two Routes From One Map
With two trucks, building routes starts the same way: the Waiting List map. The difference is that you now pick two groups of due pins for each day instead of one. Assign the first cluster to Truck 1 and the second to Truck 2, auto-route each one Closest First or Furthest First from the shop, and adjust by hand.
Keep the two routes from overlapping. Two trucks passing each other on the same streets is a sign the clusters were drawn badly. Crew GPS on the office map makes it easy to see where both trucks are during the day, and to send a same-day request to the closer one.
Give the second truck a full first week, even if that means pulling some customers forward. A new truck that sits half-empty feels like a mistake, while one that is busy from day one pays for itself sooner.
Training the New Crew
The second truck usually means a newer tech. Good access notes and panel details on every address do a lot of the training for you: the new tech reads the card and knows the panel count, the pitch, the spigot, the gate code and the dog. Have them ride along for a few days first, and teach the habits that keep the route honest, like working in order, tapping Start, Skip and Complete, and writing useful notes.
Roof safety training matters more than the app. Fall protection, ladder setup and never walking on panels come before any route.
Plans That Grow With You
SolarCleaningBossPro plans are Start at $59/month, Pro at $89/month and Crew at $199/month, with a monthly text allowance of 500, 1,000 or 2,000 segments sent and received. A second truck means more customer texts each day, so check the allowance on your plan when you add one.
