Bird Proofing and Critter Guards for Solar Panel Maintenance Plan Customers
Pigeons love solar arrays. The gap between the panels and the roof is sheltered, warm and hard for predators to reach. Squirrels and other critters find it too, and some of them chew wiring. For a solar cleaning company, bird and critter problems are both a job and an opportunity, and plan customers are the people you are best placed to help.
Why Plan Customers Are the Right Audience
Routing Recurring Solar Cleaning Visits: Homes on One Truck, Arrays on Another covered getting crews to plan customers efficiently. Once the crew is on the roof, they are in the best position anyone has to see bird and critter activity.
A plan customer gets visited twice a year or more. Every visit is a chance to notice droppings piling up on the lower panels, nesting material poking out from under the array, or chewed wire. Homeowners rarely see any of this from the ground. Your techs see it up close.
Spotting the Need
Train techs to look for the signs on every plan visit, and especially on inspection visits:
- Heavy droppings on panels, gutters or the roof below the array
- Twigs, leaves or nesting material under the panel edges
- Birds flying out from under the array as the crew sets up
- Chewed or loose wiring visible under the panels
- Debris collected behind the array
Have them take photos and write what they saw in the job notes. Those photos make the case to the customer better than any explanation. Never reach into wiring or electrical parts; note what you see and let the customer's installer handle anything electrical. Inspections are covered in Adding an Inspection Every Other Visit to a Solar Panel Maintenance Plan.
Quoting Bird Proofing and Critter Guards
When a tech notes bird or critter activity, the office follows up with an estimate. In SolarCleaningBossPro, estimates come from your service list, which can include bird proofing per panel and critter guards alongside the cleaning, minimum charge, and story and steep-pitch add-ons.
The customer approves the estimate online, and the approved estimate becomes the scheduled job. You can do the installation on the next plan visit, or as its own job if the problem is bad and the customer wants it sooner.
Pricing is yours to set from your own costs. Bird proofing is usually priced per panel or per foot of perimeter, depending on how you install it. Make sure the price covers materials, the extra time on the roof and any cleanup of existing nesting.
Tracking It on the Job
Once bird proofing or critter guards are installed, add them to the extras on the job. They then show on every visit after, right in the panel details line: “24 panels · Roof · 2-story · Low pitch · Bird proofing.”
That matters for two reasons. The tech knows to check the mesh or guards on every visit, and nobody accidentally quotes the customer for something they already have. A Bird Proofed tag on the client makes it easy to pull a list of those customers later.
Checking It Every Visit
Bird proofing is not install-and-forget. Mesh can loosen, birds can find a gap, and storms can damage guards. On every plan visit, the tech should:
- Walk the perimeter of the array from a safe position and look at the mesh or guards.
- Note any gaps, loose clips or damage in the job notes, with photos.
- Clear any new nesting material if it can be done safely.
Small repairs noted early become a small line item on the next visit, rather than a big problem the customer finds later.
Selling It Without Pushing
Let the roof do the selling. A customer who sees a photo of nesting under their array does not need much convincing. Do not offer bird proofing to everyone on every visit; offer it when there is evidence. That keeps your recommendations credible.
For plan customers who say no, keep noting what the tech sees. If the problem gets worse, the next photo will make the case.
Keep a few clear before-and-after photos of bird proofing jobs, with the homeowner's permission and no addresses showing. When a plan customer is on the fence, being able to show what the finished work looks like on a similar roof often settles the question faster than any description.
A Natural Add-On to Plans
Bird proofing and critter guards are among the most natural add-ons to a solar maintenance plan, because your crew is already there to spot the need. For how extras fit with plans, estimates and billing, see the recurring solar cleaning software page.
